Claudia Galván is a Sr Director at the Anita Borg Institute leading internationalization initiatives. For the last couple of years she has been a Technical Advisor to Startups in Silicon Valley, where she provided technical and domain expertise in market research; developing a scalable architecture; and compelling culturally-relevant product features to meet local market requirements. With almost 20 years of experience in launching software products worldwide, Claudia is considered a world-wide expert in this field. She was responsible for building international teams from the ground-up and the technology used in platforms in Fortune 500 Companies. Most recently, Claudia led the overall product internationalization effort of Hightail Web Services. At Microsoft, she was the Head of the International Team in Silicon Valley, overseeing international versions of Microsoft Online Services including Hotmail, Bing and MSN in 48 languages and 160+ markets; reaching people around the world. During her time at Microsoft Silicon Valley, she was chair of Women at Microsoft and Latinos at Microsoft where she built community and mentored emerging leaders. This resulted on being the recipient of the Global Product Development Leadership award and the Women Empowerment award. At Adobe Systems, she held senior engineering management roles, devising product globalization strategy and developing Globalization and Electronic Software Delivery technologies used in all Adobe products. Her patent US 8,438,007 B1 Software user interface human language translation was one of the early examples of end-to-end software localization. At Oracle, she was the National Language Support manager for the Tools Division. She incorporated early versions of Unicode into the Oracle Tools products for the implementation of the EURO symbol as a request of the European Union. Claudia’s journey started in Mexico City where she obtained her Computer Science degree and worked as a software developer to support her studies and graduated first of her class. Shortly after her graduation, she moved to Vancouver, Canada where she developed educational software for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools around the world. After the company was acquired by McGraw-Hill, she was relocated to Monterey, CA where she grew from Lead to senior management engineering positions responsible for end-to-end development of educational software products. In Monterey, she completed an MSc in Program and Project Management. She is currently a third year Doctoral Student at Drexel University in Sacramento, CA researching strategies on increasing the pipeline of women in engineering. Claudia is a serial-volunteer working on causes supporting Women and Latinos for the last 20 years. After holding several positions in SWE Santa Clara Valley, she became President of this section, the largest in Region A. In addition, as a board member at Notre Dame High School she is an advisor to STEM initiatives. She is also a volunteer at the TechWomen program a US Department of State initiative. She has published articles, presented at international conferences around the world and has been portrayed in national and local media. Claudia is an avid hiker, reader and overall adrenaline-junkie. She loves spending time with family and friends.
